Stage curtains are huge determining factor on setting your overall stage presence and appearance.

There are many different avenues you can take when deciding what fabric to use.

At Whaleys Stages, we offer a fantastic selection of fabrics to choose from, bespoke to your requirements.

If you are wondering what type of fabric to use for your new stage curtain, we are here to help.

What is a Stage Curtain?

Although this may seem obvious, a stage curtain is usually a large piece of fabric that is either dropped from the ceiling or split into two from each side of the stage.

Stage curtains have a huge impact on the overall stage presence and impact of the performance.

They can be made from many types of fabrics, however, flame retardant fabrics are always the best option to ensure optimal safety.

Stage curtains tend to be used for scene changes, to end a performance or just before starting a performance.

What are Stage Curtains Used For?

Stage curtains have multiple purposes. As stated above, they are mainly used for scene changes, ending a performance/show or just before a show starts.

Stage curtains can add great dramatic effect if they are utilised properly before, during and after the performance.

Typically, they allow the performers additional time to change before new scenes, as well as allowing for the stage scenes to be changed without the audience seeing it transform.

What Fabrics Can Be Used?

It is typical for stages to have the traditional red stage curtain; however, you are certainly not limited to that.

With a large range of materials and fabrics to choose from, we can provide you with a high-quality stage curtain perfect for multiple uses.

As we mentioned above, flame retardant fabrics are the best choice for optimal safety.

This can include fabrics such as polyesterwoolsilkcotton and linen, which can be chemically treated to ensure flame resistance.

Additionally, cotton velvet and crushed velvet give your stage a more luxurious feel and atmosphere.

There is no exact requirement for what type of fabric to use for stage curtains (although gauze wouldn’t be recommended).

You can be as creative as you like when it comes to picking the perfect fabric, colour, size and more. You can view our extensive range of fabrics here.

Overall, stage curtains can add to the overall atmosphere of your venue, as well as add additional dramatic effects when needed.
