Calico Cotton is an inexpensive and versatile fabric, making it suitable for a number of different types of applications such as backdrops, stage sets and costume making.
Calico Cotton is one of the oldest cotton fabrics in the textile material, with its roots originating from Calcutta in India during the 11th Century. It was traded into Britain in the 17th Century, and had a wide range of uses such as quilts, bags and aprons. This was due to having a low count thread and plain weave that was unbleached, making it perfect for printing patterns onto it.
Nowadays, it is also a popular choice for creating prototype garment samples, allowing designers to show off their work at a fraction price. In staging, Calico Cotton is ideal for backdrops and sets due to it being light in weight and long lasting in life. Our warehouse stocks natural Calico Cotton in three different widths, and all of these are finished with a non-durable flame retardant coating, meaning special care needs to be taken to ensure the material doesn’t get wet.
