Set the scene with a Cyclorama from Whaleys Stages. With over 20 years’ experience, we are a leading stage fabric manufacturer and have worked with everyone from Theatres to Schools to transform their performance spaces the world over.
Derived from the Greek words kuklos, meaning “circle,” and horama, meaning “view,” the term “cyclorama” was first introduced in a stage design catalog for Broadway’s Booth Theater in 1887. They soon became very popular to provide 360 degree views of distant landscapes and cities as well as historical events
A Cyclorama is a large piece of fabric situated at the back of the stage which when lit correctly is used to represent the sky or open space. The fabric is usually held concave to create the illusion of depth and distance or unlimited space. The fabric used in cyclorama drapes is usually heavyweight and opaque, with a matte finish to prevent any light reflection. The drapes can be made in various sizes, depending on the size of the stage or studio. The fabric is stretched and held concave to create the desired illusion of depth and distance.
Cycloramas, known as cycs, can also be projected on to create additional effects, making them even more versatile. The projection can be used to create different effects, such as the night sky, moving clouds, or changing scenery. When using cycloramas as projection surfaces, it’s important to ensure that the fabric is seamless to prevent any visual interruptions or distortions in the projected image. In order to best achieve this effect cycs must be seamless, so we suggest using filled cloth or seamless white canvas when manufacturing yours.
The construction of cyclorama drapes requires specialized skills and attention to detail, and therefore, it’s essential to work with a professional stage design company. Such companies will be able to design, manufacture, and install cycloramas that meet specific requirements and standards, ensuring that the desired visual effects are achieved.
In summary, cyclorama drapes/curtains are crucial elements in stage design, creating a seamless and versatile background that can be used to depict the sky or open space. When properly manufactured and installed, they can create a visually stunning effect and add depth to the overall stage design.
